Bringing Honesty and Integrity Back To Politics

When I made the decision to run for State Representative in District 68, I did so because I knew that our area needed a fresh perspective.  I knew the political system was broken, largely because of lifetime politicians willing to say and do anything to keep their jobs rather than devoting their time and effort to serve the people.  It was with this in mind that I pledged to always be open, to always be honest, and to focus this campaign on fixing problems and addressing the challenges many career politicians in Indianapolis seem to forget the day after each election.  Our campaign has worked extremely hard to be positive and truthful and to craft our message around the conservative principles we believe will put Indiana back on the right track.  We have a real opportunity to change the political culture in Indianapolis and send a message to Washington D.C. that we will no longer stand for politicians to play games for their benefit while we are suffering here at home.

Unfortunately, my opponent Bob Bischoff has decided to engage in old political games.  Recently he sent out mail with the intent to smear my name.  While I am committed to running a positive campaign, I will not stand idly by while my opponent makes such maliciously false allegations.  I will always refuse to speak ill of Mr. Bischoff, but I will not hesitate to point out facts.  We've all seen this act before.  You may recall that just before the election in 2008, Mr. Bischoff claimed to have the endorsement of Indiana Right to Life by publishing a newspaper ad claiming the endorsement.  He knew when he published that ad that he didn’t have the endorsement of Indiana Right to Life but in an effort to hang on to his position, truth was sacrificed to expediency.  He also knows the recent allegations he made are false.  He knows, because two years ago when he was verbally circulating those allegations, I personally delivered to him, at his home, the documentation showing such allegations to be false.  The truth of the matter is that I have never been asked to resign from any job I have held, much less been forced.  I have never had any disciplinary actions taken against me in my professional career, and the creative and completely fabricated lawsuit that was filed against me at the hands of an unscrupulous defense attorney attempting to create leverage to get his son, a convicted felon, out of prison was quickly dismissed when my resolve to fully defend and not to be strong-armed into any settlement was understood.

The sole portion of the allegations that contains truth is that as a single 28-year-old man I did date a woman I met through a case that I had helped prosecute when I worked at the Montgomery County, Ohio Prosecutor’s Office.  That dating relationship started after I had voluntarily left the prosecutor’s office having decided that I was ready to return home to southeastern Indiana.  If some say dating a woman I had met through my work was not the best decision, I will not argue with them.  But the unscrupulous allegations that are being made by my opponent are disgustingly false, and he knows it.  As your next representative I will always be willing to stand by the decisions I make and will never hide behind political spin.

Providing this personal information publicly may be unusual coming from a person running for office, but I understand that when you trust someone with your vote, you need to be confident that person will be completely honest with you.  If you are anything like me, you may have become callous to the mere words of candidates pursuing your vote.  To allow you to assure that your confidence is well placed in me, I invite you to look at the documentary evidence I have provided along with this letter.  When compared with the allegations being made, the truth is glaringly obvious. 

These types of personal attacks are nothing more than an effort to divert our attention from the real issues at hand. Given the situation our State and our Nation currently faces, the last thing we can afford is desperate politicians playing dirty political games while unemployment is skyrocketing and out of touch politicians are spending our children’s and grandchildren’s money.  Our campaign firmly believes that your vote should be based on the truth about the candidates, and where they really stand on the issues.  We believe voters should make a choice based on the candidates’ records and whose ideas will make Indiana stronger and more prosperous.

There is still time between now and the election.  Who knows what may yet be said by those not bound by the facts.  Regardless of what may be said, I want all of you to know I have nothing to hide and that I am proud of my personal and professional record and the positive, energetic campaign we are running.  We will continue to focus on new ideas and conservative principles.  It is past time we send a message that the system that got us here is no longer acceptable.  The same politicians doing the same things are the problem.  Your support will be the solution; and if we work together, we will make a difference.

           Desperate circumstances may cause a desperate candidate to make further misleading and mean-spirited attacks.  I leave you with this quote that has long scrolled across my computer screen at my office:
