Come Help Carry the Fire for the Cure!!
It has been estimated that more than half a million Americans die each year from some form of cancer. From family members to friends, its devastating effects have had an impact on all of us in some way. Remaining without a cure, it often times leaves us with feelings of sorrow and defeat. Each year our community unites to raise awareness and continue the quest for a cure for cancer. This year, from the early morning hours of June 12th until 9:00 a.m. on June 13th, Franklin County will be in uplifted spirits as the community comes together to celebrate Relay for Life. This annual event gives everyone in the community the opportunity to have a hand in the ongoing battle against a disease that all too often, finds its way into our lives. Relay for Life is a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and most importantly to fight back against the disease.
This year, for the first time in the events 8 years, Franklin County’s Relay For Life will kick off with the passing of the Relay Torch. The Relay Torch will weave through the streets of Brookville on a ten mile course culminating with a lap around the town park track to officially open the Ceremonies. This torch, which is symbolic of the courageous men and women, young and old, who have fought the treacherous battle with cancer, will light a fire that will stay lit throughout the entire twenty-four hour event.
Much like fighting the battle to defeat cancer takes all of us, it will take a group effort to carry the flame over the ten mile course. We encourage all survivors, those fighting the fight, and those honoring someone near to them to “carry the fire” of the Relay Torch. Whether you walk or run, for one minute or one mile, you can do your part in saving, and celebrating a life! To be a part of the inaugural passing of the Relay Torch, please contact Jud McMillin, Allen Beneker, or Mike Cunningham at (765) 647-4105 or send an e-mail to judmcmillin@yahoo.com. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents the hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. On June 12, be the hope, be the support; be the cure!
